YOU CAN CALL IT A CHAMPIONSHIP:

DUNGEY HAS THE POINTS

With the likelihood of Ryan Villipoto returning to racing this season standing at nil, we can now crunch some numbers on the remainder of the championship.

Ryan Dungey is currently sitting on 302 points.
Ryan Villopoto will remain on 266 points.
Joshua Hill is on 225 points.
Kevin Windham is on 223.
David Millsaps is on 215.

In case you didn't know, the points work on the following scale for each placing, per round:
1st: 25 points
2nd: 22 points
3rd: 20 points
4th: 18 points
5th: 16 points
6th: 15 points
7th: 14 points
...etc

so in case you're useless at maths it works out like this:
If Josh Hill, the closest rider to Dungey, were to win each of the remaining three rounds he could score a maximum of 75 points - taking his season total to 300 - two short of Ryan Dungey's current score. Dungey cannot be overtaken in the season standings, and doesn't even have to race to win the crown in his rookie year!
This will no doubt be a little disastrous for ticket sales.
Davi Millsaps, on the other hand, currently is in fifth place, but he and the other riders ahead of him all still have a chance at taking out the second place.
All these riders will know thatthey can't take out the championship win, but in the race for second everyone will have to work as hard as ever to make each event count for something.
