Racing news from MX Nats at Patetonga
last
weekend under sunny skies, Patetonga hosted the penultimate
round of the Demon Energy National Motocross Championship for the first
time. Despite some early criticisms about the track, the club can
certainly be proud of an excellent event.
In the MX1 class, nobody could keep up with an on-form Cody Cooper, who was
nearly 3 seconds clear of his closest rival in qualifying and went on to win
all 3 races of the day. Justin McDonald took second place honours for the
weekend and remains the championship leader however, his 22 point lead has been
slashed to just 11. Mason Phillips fought back to fifth in the first race after a disastrous start. Phillips impressed all to take third place on the
podium, scoring 5-4-2.
In the MX2 class, Michael Phillips took the top
spot for the weekend with a fourth and 2 wins followed by Scott Columb. Nick
Saunders was third for the weekend. Phillips now leads the championship by just
four points over Columb.
In the 125cc class, Damien King didn’t have it all
his way at Patetonga. Ethan Martens won the first race followed by King but
could not repeat his performance for races two and three. King won the final
two races to win the weekend and extend his championship lead. Martens took
second place for the weekend followed by Mike Cotter.
With the points so close at the top of the
championship table, this weekend’s final round in New Plymouth is sure to be
intense. There’s racing all day on Sunday at the Barrett Road Track, so head
along if you’re in the area for what will surely be some close racing.
